Context and appropriation

Context Is important to Brian Jungstens work because if you were to just look at his work all you would see is a bunch of garbage glued and stuck together.  But when you hear the context and meaning behind his art you get a better understanding and appreciation for it. This also goes for appropriation art. Appropriation by some would be seen as copying other people's art work, or a lazy technique. But when you  hear the context of it you can understand what the artist is expressing though it

High Action picture (finally) and Random sunny day

I have been trying for a long time to be able to capture clear high action pictures but could never get it. After watching a tutorial I realized I needed natural light, so I could turn my shutter speed up high. Me and my friend went golfing on a sunny day and I turned my shutter speed up to 1/1000. Along with the shutter speed I turned the shooting mode from single to continuous shots, so I could choose what picture was the greatest. Since the shutter speed was up high I also turned the ISO sensitivity up to 1600, so capture as much light at possible with such a fast shutter speed. Lastly I adjusted my aperture to a average opening and this is what came out of it. All the other pictures are just from today out in the school court yard. I am going to edit the dandelion picture and will post that tomorrow

Photography

Since I have gotten a lot better at taking close up portrait pictures, I decided to try and work on high action photography. I looked at techniques online and found the best way to approach this is to turn the shutter speed up higher, and use flash mode. My first attempt was in my basement kicking a ball around and taking a picture of it mid air. These pictures actually turned out really good.

 Me and my friends went out to the golf course and I made an attempt to take pictures of them swinging and hitting. Most of the pictures didn't work and I think that's because I couldn't get close enough with the flash to capture the whole swing. I couldn't not use the flash because if i turned the shutter speed all the way up then the image would be to dark.

 When I first got to the golf course we started taking the pictures of them swinging there golf clubs and none of them came out the way I hoped. I was trying to set the the aperture at around F.7 to keep their clubs focused and the background blurred, this is what came out.

After these pictures were not working I decided to do what im good at and take close up pictures, using low aperture and not using flash, what came out was not to bad. Some pictures are with flash and you can see that, my personal favorites are the ones without flash.

Writing Assignment

1.   You are familiar with the Elements of design (and some of the Principles). Do you think that the Elements & Principles of design can help you fully appreciate contemporary art? In my opinion elements and principles may help some people, and some people might not like them. This all depends on  if the person viewing the art is an artist and wants to appreciate the art on a higher level. If they look at the art and consider the elements and principals, they can then use what they see on their own work. If your just someone looking for something to look at then the elements and principles do not matter when appreciating art. 

2.   Briefly summarize the work of Glenn Ligon & William Kentridge after watching the videos from Art21. Then, read about the Postmodern Principles (by Olivia Gude).

3.   Do you think that these Postmodern Principles would make it easier to understand & appreciate Ligon & Kentridge’s work? Or, would you be able to comprehend the significance of their work using the Elements & Principles of design? In my opinion if someone was to study the Postmodern Principles and know them all on a good level, then they would help to appreciate Ligon and Kentridge's work. If someone looked at the Postmodern Principles for a few minutes they would know that the artist's use the principles, but would not need them to appreciate the work.

Photography Update

This weekend I worked more on taking portraits and using the aperture to my advantage. What I found was that I was using too low of a aperture, for the distance I was away from what I was taking a picture of. I was using a F.number of about 5.5 to take pictures of things that were say 2 feet in front of me. This was causing the whole photo to be blurry, rather than the subject. I took the best picture I have taken this weekend, and have attached it to show it off. What I'm not happy with are the other pictures I took, i am going to focus on taking pictures from a moderate distance away, to get the focus just right. 

This picture is my favorite picture I have taken. I set my aperture to F5, and got really close to my dog to get the focus and blurred background. What came out was something way better than i expected, in my opinion it shows what setting your camera aperture can really do. 

These last two photos I added did not come out as i was hoping for. I like the idea of both my sister and dog looking into a blurred background, but it would be better if the background was just a little more blurred, and my dog was clearer.

This picture would have been better if my aperture was set higher, to get and all around focus. The way this photo is, the brick wall and rake look more like the focal point, rather than my sister.

Photography Update

When I first started using the camera I only knew how to change the ISO and my pictures were not that successful. Now that I know how to use the aperture, and shutter speed as well, my pictures turn out much better. I have been focusing most on taking blurred background portraits, and using the settings to get the correct exposure without the flash. I have included a few pictures one with the flash, and one without. My favorite is the one without the flash.

The other day I was fooling around with Mrs Rose Camera and she showed me a online digital photography course for me to take a look at. I read the first few lines and realized it was pretty interesting, so I decided to take more of an interest in it.The first thing they teach everyone studying photography is to take your camera off of auto mode, and putting it into manual mode. Manual mode (M) allows you to control all the effects that the auto mode uses, but in the extent to which you feel comfortable. So far I have learned how to adjust your ISO which controls how much light is used in your photograph. For example if you were taking a picture outside in the sun you would set your ISO sensitivity at something like 200. If you were to take the same picture but when its cloudy you would turn the sensitivity up to around 400-800, to get the same exposure as a picture taken in direct sunlight. I also learned many different camera filters, and how to crop the photos on the camera itself. I will keep working on the website and with the camera and hopefully post a few good pictures this weekend.

More pictures

First Series Peice

For the longest time I've been working on my first Series art work and deciding what I'm going to make. First I found a tattoo design that I thought I would do with pointilism but I found it didn't really show any talent or colour blending, and that's what I wanted to work on. So I made a few dot density charts and then started my final peice. The one problem I faced when making this was showing my light source and shadow. The circle itself is good but I'm going to have to work on my light source more.

Does Popular Art = Good Art?

In my opinion art that is considered good art is hard to come by and decide. There is no single person that decides what is good art and what is bad art, it all depends on who is viewing the art work. Someone like me for instance might find Jackson Pollock's artwork good art, and the voice of fire the complete opposite. Then there are other people who look at the Voice Of Fire and appreciate the detail that went into making the lines.

What's Art, What isn't

The question what is art, and what is not art is a difficult question to be faced with. The reason it is difficult is because it is very easy to decide what is art, but deciding what isn't is what's difficult.

In my opinion everything we consider art is art. Painting, clay, sculpting,drawing, pastels,and basically anything you create with your own hands.For example if you are outside and build a snowman,that is an example of art. 

What isn't art is where i was stumped as to what to put. From what I can come up with is that if you copy someone's idea, then it is not artwork. Art is supposed to be original to everyone,and copying someones idea is not original. Another thing that is not art is when you trace over an original picture.

 To me what is in between art and not, is photography. Since photography is not something you make with your own hands it can not be classified as art. It can be classified as art somewhat because it takes time and the photographers original eye, or point of view to take just the right photo.

 

Finally

After over a week of trying to come up with an idea for my series and I think I finally have. I have always been interested in working with clay but wanted to make something different. Yesterday while I was at the library in nipigon I found a wood working magazine, and immediately thought of clay. Since clay can be worked into the same shape as the wood they work with. I could use the techniques they use in the magazine to
Shape my clay.

The things I'm goin to make our  items  Like a bread board with carvings and engraving in it representing my family. I could also make a candy dish or another flat tile. I have not completely decided everything I'm goin to make but I do want to make something like   a bread board.
